The lawyer of the arrested mayor of Istanbul was detained in Turkey


Turkish authorities have detained the lawyer of the previously arrested mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu. This was announced on Friday, March 28, according to the Reuters news agency.
Turan Taskin Ozer, a deputy of the opposition Republican People's Party, said that the lawyer of the mayor of Istanbul, Mehmet Pehlivan, was detained for "fabricated reasons."
According to local media, Pehlivan was detained "on charges of laundering illegally obtained funds." He was detained at his home on the night of March 28.
Law enforcement agencies issued a warrant for Imamoglu's detention on March 19. An anti-corruption operation has been launched against the Istanbul administration. It concerns the holding of city tenders, as well as clarifying the details of the interaction of opposition officials with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party. The mayor of the city was arrested on March 23. After that, the Interior Ministry announced that Imamoglu had been temporarily suspended from his duties. The Council of Istanbul Municipality has elected Nuri Aslan as the acting mayor of the city.
Later, mass protests began in Turkey in connection with the detention of the mayor.
