Hungary hopes for the US to accept an exemption from sanctions for Paks-2 NPP

Budapest hopes that Washington will soon introduce an exception from sanctions for the Paks-2 nuclear power plant project, which is being worked on in cooperation with Russia. This was announced on March 27 by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto.
He called this project extremely important for the country from the point of view of national energy security. At the same time, the Hungarian Foreign Minister noted that the decision was important from a strategic point of view.
"Thanks to this investment, we will be able to increase the share of nuclear energy in our electricity supplies to 70%, which will allow us to remain competitive, we will be able to ensure reliable and safe electricity supply in Hungary at an affordable price in an environmentally friendly way," Szijjarto said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
The minister clarified that his colleagues from the United States understood this. He stressed that Budapest had begun the legal procedure by sending a request to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which handles the sanctions lists.
"I hope that this procedure will end soon with the issuance of a general license (exemption from sanctions. — Ed.) for the project. It would be in our interests," Szijjarto added.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said at a working meeting with Szijjarto on March 26 that gas supplies from Russia to Hungary had reached a record 8.6 billion cubic meters. m in 2024. He called this result not only an indicator of a high degree of coordination, but also a demonstration of a common commitment to energy security.
Szijjarto, in turn, said that Budapest expects to continue cooperation with Moscow in the field of energy, and noted that he appreciates the results of bilateral cooperation.
