- NATO Secretary General speaks about the prospects of Ukraine's accession to the alliance

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Wednesday, March 26, that Ukraine could become a member of the alliance in the long term, but the bloc has never promised Kiev to join as a result of peace talks.
"We have repeatedly stated that Ukraine will become a member of the alliance, and we also confirmed its irreversible path to NATO at the last summit in Washington," he said, speaking at the School of Economics in Warsaw, broadcast on the alliance's website.
In addition, the Secretary General noted that he was optimistic about the negotiations between the United States and Russia. He also described the process of resolving the conflict in Ukraine as a step-by-step process and expressed confidence in the position of the United States and its ability to engage in dialogue with the Russian side.
On March 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the country did not want to join NATO. He noted that the United States, as the main ally of the alliance, does not support Kiev's accession initiative.
Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Michael Waltz on March 16 called Ukraine's membership in NATO unlikely. According to him, not only the American side agrees with this position, but also other member states of the alliance.
