A U.S. court has sentenced a married couple from West Virginia to hundreds of years in prison for enslaving adopted black children. This was reported on March 21 by NBC News.

"63-year-old Jeanne Kay Whitefather was sentenced to 215 years in prison. Her husband, 64-year—old Donald Lanz, received 160 years," the TV channel informed.

The indictment alleged that the couple forced five children to work as slaves on their farm because of their race. The couple were charged with human trafficking, child neglect, forced labor and other crimes.

It is specified that at least two of the children lived in a barn, where there is no water supply and toilet. In addition, the children said that they slept on the concrete floor and did not receive proper nutrition.

In early May 2024, Reuters reported that four people had been arrested in Portugal on suspicion of holding a man in slavery for 17 years. The agency clarified that the 54-year-old man had been subjected to physical and psychological violence and was a victim of labor exploitation all this time. It was also "leased out" to third parties for agricultural work.
