Exactly one year ago, on March 22, 2024, Russia was shaken by a terrible tragedy. Four terrorists broke into the Crocus City Hall and attacked the people who came to the concert. 145 people became victims of the terrorist attack, and more than 550 were injured. In memory of the victims, Izvestia has prepared a special project "On white wings to the sky." On the anniversary of the event, Izvestia recalls the chronology of that terrible day and all those who died in the terrorist attack.

Terrorist attack in Crocus on March 22, 2024: chronology of events

On the evening of March 22, more than six thousand people gathered in Crocus City Hall. The guests came to the concert of the band "Picnic". The first reports of gunfire appeared around eight in the evening. Unidentified men appeared in the parking lot in front of the complex and opened fire towards the main entrance, and then entered the building. The attackers were armed with machine guns and did not hide their faces.

The attackers were armed with machine guns and did not hide their faces, shooting everyone in their path. They spilled a flammable mixture in the concert hall and set it on fire. As it will become clear later, the terrorists were clearly well prepared and knew where to go.

The Crocus City Hall fire brigade was at the scene of the terrorist attack from the very first minutes, the staff showed heroism in rescuing people from the concert hall.

The concert hall's security guards also helped the firefighters, they broke down the doors blocked by the audience from the terrorists and took people out. Hundreds of people were escorted out by cloakroom attendants and other Crocus employees. Four teenagers were among the helpers. Later, the President of the Russian Federation awarded them medals "For saving the dead."

Muscovites and residents of the Moscow region, having learned about the tragedy, rushed to help the victims: some gave people free rides, others lined up at blood donation points, and others distributed basic necessities.

How many people died in Crocus

145 people became victims of the terrorist attack in Crocus, including six children, and 551 more were injured. Nine children from six families remained orphans after the terrorist attack in Crocus.

Classmates from the capital of Mordovia, Saransk, 51-year-old Tatiana Pihnovskaya and 52-year-old Irina Firsova, had been friends since school and decided to go to a concert together. The last bell and the beginning of the shooting caught them in the bathroom. Tatiana managed to call her husband.

A young family from Kirov, Pavel and Irina Okisheva, also died in the terrorist attack: the couple had long dreamed of attending the performance, and their friends gave them the tickets. Irina was fond of photography, Pavel worked as a furniture assembler, he was about to turn 35 the other day. They came to the capital to celebrate the anniversary.

Among the dead is 42-year-old Ekaterina Novoselova, formerly Miss Tver. The woman was a fan of the band and had recently moved to Moscow from Khabarovsk. She is survived by two children and her husband.

The terrorists from Crocus: What will happen to them now, when the verdict is passed

At least 27 defendants are involved in the case of the terrorist attack on March 22, 2024.

In an address to the Russians, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the incident a bloody and barbaric terrorist act and stressed that all perpetrators, organizers and customers of the terrorist attack will be punished.

Today, 27 people have been arrested in the case, and the arrest period for four perpetrators has been extended once again until March 24.

What is now on the site of the burnt-out Crocus City Hall

In February, a memorial in memory of the victims of the terrorist attack began to be erected near the building of Crocus City Hall. It is planned to open on the anniversary of the tragedy, on March 22, at 12.00 Moscow time.

As a result of the fire, the building was almost completely destroyed by fire. The discussion about the fate of the building continues. According to one of the proposals, the concert hall should be revived. However, an opinion poll has shown that the majority of Russians oppose the restoration of Crocus City Hall. A memorial is proposed to be built on this site, which was eventually done.
