Six policemen were injured during a protest in Istanbul on Thursday, March 20. This was announced by the Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

"Six policemen were injured during demonstrations in Saracan (Istanbul). Our heroic police officers, who guarantee the peace and security of our country, resist provocations with great wisdom, patience and common sense and demonstrate an exemplary position on how to manage social incidents," Yerlikaya wrote on his Facebook page. Protests in support of the detained Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu took place on this day in Ankara and Istanbul.

Law enforcement agencies issued a warrant for Imamoglu's detention on March 19. According to the Sabah newspaper, about 100 arrest warrants were issued in total. It concerns the holding of city tenders, as well as clarifying the details of the interaction of opposition officials with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party.

On March 19, opposition leader and head of the Republican People's Party (CHP) Ozgur Ozel called on Turkish citizens to protest in support of Imamoglu on March 23. Due to the situation in the country, the authorities have banned mass political actions in Istanbul.
