- Lukashenko congratulates the first woman at the head of the IOC on her election to the post

President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has congratulated Kirsty Coventry on her election as President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This was announced on March 20 by the press service of the head of state in the Telegram channel.
"I am convinced that under your leadership the international Olympic movement will be able to make a significant contribution to strengthening friendship and mutual understanding between peoples and countries, ensuring accessibility of sports for all," the Belarusian leader said.
Coventry became the first woman to hold the post of president of the IOC. In total, she will become the tenth head of this organization.
Thomas Bach, the current president of the committee, will resign on June 23 this year.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also congratulated Coventry on his election. He pointed to Coventry's unique experience and her interest in promoting the noble Olympic ideals. This will contribute to the successful work in the new post, he noted. Putin wished the IOC President-elect well-being and strong, "truly athletic" health.
