The administration of US President Donald Trump plans to use the military to capture and detain illegal migrants along the border with Mexico. This was reported by The Washington Post (WP) on March 20.

"The Trump administration is considering plans by the Pentagon to take control of a buffer zone along a vast stretch of the southern border and provide existing American troops with the authority to temporarily detain migrants illegally entering the United States," the newspaper reports, citing sources among the country's officials.

At the same time, it is noted that formally such a step would be contrary to federal law, which prohibits active troops from participating in most law enforcement missions.

"If the law is passed, many miles of the buffer zone will become a temporary military base, which will allow American troops to play the most direct role in the president's enforcement mission," WP points out.

On March 6, the NYT newspaper reported on the disappointment of the Trump administration with the pace of deportations of migrants. The United States has conducted almost 23,000 arrests over the past month. At the same time, the pace of deportations and expulsions has not kept pace with the number of detainees who need to be detained. This situation severely depletes the resources of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
