The vernal equinox occurs annually in the second half of March. This phenomenon marks the beginning of the astronomical spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Since ancient times, the event has been associated with many signs and beliefs that have survived to the present day. Izvestia tells you when the vernal equinox day arrives in 2005 and how to congratulate your family and friends on the holiday.

Beautiful postcards and pictures with the day of the vernal equinox

The seasons change several times a year as a result of the tilt of the earth's axis. As our planet moves in orbit, the angle of incidence of the sun's rays changes. By the beginning of spring, the Sun is positioned exactly above the Earth's equator. As a result, both hemispheres receive almost the same amount of light, and day and night are compared in duration.

Since the sun moves from south to north, the daylight gradually decreases in the Southern Hemisphere at this time. In the North, on the contrary, the days are getting longer. This process will reach its peak on June 21, at the summer solstice, after which the daylight will gradually decrease.

The date and time of the vernal equinox vary from year to year. Spring usually arrives in the Northern Hemisphere between March 19th and 21st. In 2025, it's March 20th. It is on this date that the sun will cross the equator and move from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Hemisphere. The next time the Sun reaches the equator is at the autumnal equinox on September 22. From now on, the dark time of day will begin to increase until the winter solstice, which this year will be on December 21.

With the arrival of astronomical spring, many significant events take place. Not only nature is awakening, but many animals are coming out of hibernation, and migratory birds are returning to their native lands after wintering. The first plants and insects also appear. Farmers, according to custom, begin to prepare for crops and other field work.

For a long time, the arrival of spring has been considered a great holiday among different nations. The vernal equinox began to be celebrated long before the phenomenon received a scientific explanation. In many cultures, this day was given a mystical meaning and was accompanied by various rituals.

Among Persian-speaking and Turkic-speaking peoples, for example, the arrival of spring is celebrated as the beginning of the new year. In Iran and Central Asia, it is known as Nowruz (translated from Persian as "new day"). It was first celebrated more than three millennia ago. One of the symbols of the holiday is sprouted wheat sprouts tied with a red ribbon. Eggs are also painted green for the celebration, which symbolizes the birth of all life on earth.

This holiday is popular in Iran, Afghanistan, Albania, Turkey. It is celebrated in a number of Russian regions — Tatarstan, Bashkiria, and Dagestan — as well as in the former Soviet republics of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan.

In Japan, the holiday of commemoration of the ancestors, Higan, falls at this time. It begins three days before the equinox and lasts a week. On the days of the celebration, the Japanese visit cemeteries and temples, clean up the house and prepare ritual dishes.

The coming of spring was also celebrated in Russia. The ancient Slavs believed that at this time the earth was visited by Yarilo, the god of the spring sun and fertility, who was also revered as the first farmer. The celebrations were accompanied by dancing, songs and treats. Traditionally, cookies in the shape of larks were baked for the holiday, which can also be found on holiday cards.

With the spread of Christianity, the vernal equinox day acquired a slightly different meaning. The day of Easter celebration began to count down from him.

According to the custom, on this holiday, residents of different countries congratulate each other on the arrival of astronomical spring. The easiest way to remember the celebration is to send a greeting card. It can depict solar symbols, the first flowers blooming under the rays of the spring sun, birds singing outside the window and other subjects.
