Due to heavy snowfalls in several districts of the Sakhalin region, schools have switched to distance learning. This was announced on March 14 by the governor of the region, Valery Limarenko, in an interview with Izvestia.

"There is a cyclone on Sakhalin again, snow is falling almost throughout the Sakhalin region. <...> We have announced a distance for almost all schools today. The children stayed at home, hence there is less traffic on the streets. But, nevertheless, all passenger transport runs," the governor said.

He clarified that at the moment there are no interruptions in the operation of public transport, the snowfall also did not affect the operation of planes and trains. In addition, all functions related to life support are performed.

Limarenko added that he had held an emergency meeting with the Ministry of Emergency Situations. According to him, experts have begun to combat the effects of the cyclone. All the equipment went out on the streets to complete the tasks of clearing roads. The governor noted that the situation is under control, according to preliminary data, the snowfall will end by 23:00 local time (15:00 Moscow time).

He also clarified that some sections of roads were blocked for safety due to poor visibility. Drivers need to choose detours in advance.

On February 12, it was reported that schools in Severo-Kurilsk, Sakhalin Region, were switched to a distance learning format due to a severe snowstorm. The authorities clarified that wind gusts in the city reached 35 m/s.
