- The political scientist pointed to Europe's attempts to find a balance in relations with Trump over Ukraine.

European countries are afraid of the reaction of US President Donald Trump to radical measures to support Ukraine because of his unpredictability. This opinion was shared by political analyst Alexander Asafov in an interview with Izvestia on March 13.
Earlier in the day, the Financial Times newspaper reported that the leaders of the European Union (EU) are afraid of Trump's retaliation for increasing military aid to Ukraine, as they consider them to be an obstacle to resolving the conflict.
"Trump is dangerous with his unpredictability and vindictiveness. European leaders, especially those who have been in office for a long time, remember this very well and understand that there may indeed be sanctions for a position on Ukraine that contradicts Trump's views. <...> And these are well—founded concerns," Asafov commented.
He noted that the US pressure can be seen in what duties Washington is imposing and the rhetoric of Trump's entourage, including the head of the Department of Public Administration Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk, and the son of President Donald Trump Jr.
"Presumably, some proposals from the Europeans to Trump will be able to help Ukraine and will not be perceived very painfully by him. But, of course, the process that Trump is leading to is ahead — he needs to shift costs to Europe," the source added.
At the same time, he believes, Trump will be against those EU support measures for Kiev that could provoke a world war. However, the option in which European countries will supply American weapons to Ukraine will suit the American president quite well, the political scientist concluded.
"They (the EU leaders. They are really looking for the very balance where Trump's red lines would not cross," he concluded.
Earlier, on March 11, Trump announced that he intended to obtain the consent of Russian leader Vladimir Putin for a cease-fire in Ukraine. He stressed that he was going to have a conversation with the Russian president this week. According to Trump, representatives of the countries will meet in the next few days to discuss the Ukrainian conflict.
