Brazilian authorities are cutting down the Amazon rainforest for the construction of a four-lane highway to the venue of the COP30 climate summit, the BBC reported on March 12.

It is noted that the main goal of the deforestation project is to relieve the transport system of the city of Belen. He is going to host more than 50,000 people, including world leaders, at the climate conference in November 2025.

The Amazon plays a vital role in carbon sequestration and biodiversity, and many believe that such deforestation contradicts the very purpose of the climate summit, the article says.

While local authorities are praising the characteristics of the future highway, local residents and eco-activists are outraged by its negative impact on the environment.

"Our crops have already been cut down. We no longer have the income to support our family," the TV channel quoted one of the residents living near the place where the road will be built.

It is noted that he has not received any compensation from the government and is still relying on savings.

The road leaves two disconnected sections of protected forest. Scientists are concerned that this will destroy the ecosystem and disrupt the movement of wild animals, according to the publication.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference, or Climate Summit, is held annually. The countries participating in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change participate in it.

On the sidelines of COP29, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called 2024 the hottest year in history and drew attention to the fact that the world is facing various weather disasters, and therefore countries must cooperate to combat climate change.
