Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, the leader of the Stand Up, France party, said that French President Emmanuel Macron is deliberately lying about the alleged Russian threat to the European Union in order to manipulate public opinion and distract attention from the country's problems. He expressed this opinion on March 10 on the France Info TV channel.

Dupont-Aignan considers the EU's plan to invest 800 billion euros in defense "complete madness", since Russia poses no threat to unification.

"First of all, there is no Russian threat to the European Union. This is nonsense invented by the President of the republic to scare the French, manipulate public opinion and drive our country further into debt," Dupont—Aignan said.

He noted that the French leader is deliberately lying about the Russian threat in order to distract attention from the existing problems in the country, including financial ones.

"The threat to France is its financial collapse. We are on the verge of a currency crisis. We are on the verge of confiscating the savings of the French," the party leader said.

He also added that as long as France criticizes US President Donald Trump for seeking peace, it will not be able to participate in a dialogue at the negotiating table.

Earlier, on March 6, Barron's magazine reported on the approval by EU leaders of an 800 billion euro European rearmament plan. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that EU countries have approved a plan to strengthen the bloc's defense capability as a bulwark against Russia, as Trump turns away from the United States' transatlantic partners.
