Blogger Alexandra Mitroshina has been placed under house arrest in a criminal case of money laundering. She is suspected of legalizing funds received from tax evasion. What is Mitroshina accused of?

• A criminal case against Mitroshina was initiated under the article on the legalization of large amounts of money or other property acquired as a result of a crime (paragraph "b" of Part 4 of Article 174.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The investigation is being conducted by the Investigative Department for the Southern Administrative District of the Main Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia in Moscow.

• Mitroshina received 127 million rubles as a result of tax evasion, which she was suspected of back in 2023. To make these funds legal, the blogger legalized them by purchasing real estate in the center of Moscow — a three-room apartment on Bolshaya Dmitrovka Street with an area of 111 square meters. m. Later, according to the girl's lawyer, she sold this apartment for 60 million rubles.

• The criminal case became known on March 7. On that day, Mitroshina was detained at Sochi airport, where she had arrived from Dubai. Since March 2022, she has lived in the United Arab Emirates and returned to Russia for the first time in three years.

• On March 8, Mitroshina was taken to Moscow, where on March 10 she was given a preventive measure in the Chertanovsky District Court. She was placed under house arrest until April 24. The girl was forbidden to use the Internet and other means of communication.

• The blogger pleaded guilty to money laundering. She stated that she did not know that buying an apartment could become money laundering. She also promised not to obstruct the investigation.

• The maximum penalty facing Mitroshina is up to seven years in prison and a fine of up to 1 million rubles.

What else was Mitroshina accused of?

• The reason for Mitroshina's accusation of money laundering was a previous criminal case initiated in 2023 in connection with tax evasion (Part 2 of Article 198 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Then it was established that Mitroshina had been using the simplified taxation system for individual entrepreneurs (IP) from October 2020 to May 2022 and exceeded the limit of 150 million rubles. In order not to switch to a common taxation system, Mitroshina transferred funds to three affiliated sole proprietors, that is, she split up the business.

• Thus, Mitroshina evaded paying taxes by 127 million rubles. Together with penalties and fines, the amount of debt owed to the Federal Tax Service (FTS) increased to 213 million rubles. Back in June 2022, the blogger told her subscribers that she had debts of more than 200 million rubles.

• The criminal case was initiated in March 2023. A month and a half later, Mitroshina announced that she had paid off all debts owed to the Federal Tax Service. She admitted her guilt and noted that she had made a mistake by not paying due attention to her accounting. As a result, the criminal case was dismissed. According to the lawyer, Mitroshina subsequently paid about 666 million rubles in taxes to the budget for almost two years.

What is Mitroshina known for

• Mitroshina became famous thanks to her Instagram blog (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist in Russia and banned), which she started running back in 2011. She has 2.7 million followers on this social network. In total, 680,000 more users have subscribed to it on other platforms. Mitroshina changed the subject of her blogs several times and eventually focused on stories about running and promoting social networks. According to her, in 2021 alone she earned 303 million rubles from selling ads on Instagram.

• In 2017, Mitroshina founded the Instalogia training project, dedicated to the promotion of blogs and their monetization. She became one of the first to take up teaching in this field, for which she received the nickname "Mother of Lies" — this is also the name of her Telegram and YouTube channels. Currently, the cost of Mitroshina's most expensive training program out of 30 video lectures is 1 million rubles. Among her programs is "Legal Blogging," where she talks about accounting and legal support for blogs.

• Mitroshina holds conferences in support of her courses. She also wrote a book "Promoting personal blogs on Instagram" and directed her own mini-series "Gone to be a Blogger" starring herself. In addition to her main business, Mitroshina also produces author's Precision Fitness workouts and actively sells advertising on social networks.

• Mitroshina started supporting the bill on domestic violence after the high-profile murder of Oksana Sadykova, a mother with many children, in 2019. The blogger invited subscribers to sign a petition for the adoption of the law, urged them to tell their stories related to domestic violence, and created a mutual assistance center "You are not alone."

• In 2020, Mitroshina gave a training lecture in Kiev. The meeting was disrupted by provocateurs and ended in a fight, to which police officers were called. After that, the blogger was banned from entering Ukraine for three years due to the fact that she visited Crimea earlier in 2017.
