- The political scientist called Meloni's idea of including Ukraine in an article on NATO defense absurd.

The statement by Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni to extend the fifth article of the NATO charter on collective defense to Ukraine is an absurd attempt by Rome to divert media attention to itself. Pavel Feldman, Candidate of Political Sciences, Professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, shared this opinion with Izvestia on March 7.
Earlier, Meloni proposed extending the fifth article of the North Atlantic Alliance on collective defense to Ukraine without its participation in the unification. According to the Italian prime minister, such an option would be "a guarantee of stable, long-term and effective security."
"The Italian Prime Minister's proposal is too absurd to be taken seriously. With such statements, Meloni may greatly disappoint [US President] Donald Trump, who until recently sympathized with her. Probably, someone in Rome decided to shift the attention of the world's media from [French leader] Emmanuel Macron to his own person. It turned out to be stupid and unconvincing," commented Feldman.
According to him, even the "most notorious Russophobes" did not appreciate Meloni's zeal. Thus, the source stressed, Ukraine refuses to be accepted into NATO precisely because the Americans and Europeans categorically do not want to take it under their security umbrella.
"No one in the West in their right mind would commit themselves to fighting for a country that has an unresolved territorial conflict with Russia. If Italy wants to grant the regime of [the President of Ukraine] If Vladimir Zelensky has any security guarantees, then Meloni should tell his fellow citizens about it, who clearly do not plan to go to the trenches near Kiev," the expert concluded.
Shortly before that, it became known that the EU summit on March 6 decided to reorient the European Investment Bank to finance military programs.
