Negotiations have begun in Cairo between By Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement on the next stage of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. This was reported on February 27 by the TV channel Al Jazeera with reference to sources.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry noted that the delegations of the parties met to find out whether there is common ground for negotiations on extending the first phase of the truce. It clarifies that Israel is seeking to extend the agreement under which Hamas releases three hostages each week in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

According to the TV channel, the parties did not say what would be done if the first phase of the ceasefire expired without an extension of the agreements.

On February 27, Hamas announced its readiness start negotiations on the second stage of the agreement. The movement's press service added that any attempts by the Israeli government to withdraw from the agreement and prevent its implementation would only lead to greater suffering for Palestinian prisoners and Israeli hostages.
