- The Council of the Russian Federation mocked the European Union over the 16th package of sanctions against Russia

European countries themselves are suffering because of the imposition of sanctions, but we should not expect rational and logical decisions from the leadership of these states. This was stated by Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Russian Federation Committee on Foreign Affairs Andrei Klimov on Monday, February 24, commenting on the approval by the European Union (EU) of the 16th package of economic sanctions and individual restrictions against Russia.
According to the senator, the EU is such an inertial mass, formed at a completely different time, for a different reason, by other people and for other purposes. And it continues to move in its own direction.
"It is not possible to expect something different, rational and logical from it. Although there are some isolated islands of common sense within this mass, but they are not doing the weather there yet. Therefore, there is nothing surprising in these actions, but their time has passed. I generally call them countries of historical sunset," Klimov said in a conversation with "Abzats".
Earlier in the day, EU foreign ministers approved the 16th package of sanctions against Russia, RT reports.
The sanctions list includes 48 individuals and 35 organizations. In addition, the EU foreign ministers decided to ban 13 banks from access to the SWIFT system, reports NSN. Restrictions are also imposed on the import of chromium, some chemicals and on the maintenance of oil and gas processing plants.
According to the text of the EU statement, additionally sanctions affected 74 ships, which allegedly belong to the shadow fleet of Russia, reported on the website kp.ru.
It is specified that the introduction of the 16th package of sanctions against Russia timed to the third anniversary of the beginning of the special military operation.
On February 19, the chairman of the State Duma Committee on Economic Policy, Maxim Topilin, told Izvestia that any anti-Russian sanctions are a violation of international trade rules and a manifestation of the agony of European regimes.
