- SCMP said a private school in the PRC plans to introduce corporal punishment for students

A private school in southern China has asked parents of students to agree to the introduction of corporal punishment such as hand flogging and prolonged standing. This was reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on February 23.
According to the piece, hand whippings for each individual punishment should not exceed 10 times, and the duration of the standoff can last up to two hours. The school's rules state that in this way students will be "more aware" of their mistakes and correct their behavior by becoming law-abiding.
"The lashing punishment is aimed at those who do not do their homework or make mistakes in class. It can only be done once a week and it serves as a reminder to the students," an unnamed teacher shared.
The teacher added that the school offers transfer to other institutions if the rules are not accepted. School rules also prohibit boys from wearing long hair and girls from wearing makeup, manicures and jewelry. In addition, according to the charter, students' clothes should not cost more than 100 yuan ($14) and shoes should not cost more than 80 yuan ($11).
School officials said the charter is in line with the Ministry of Education's 2021 regulations, but the department's decree prohibits any form of corporal punishment and requires the exclusion of punishments exceeding 45 minutes.
It is specified that the school has a total of 2.5 thousand students from the first to ninth grades.
In October last year in the Ministry of Education of the Moscow region informed "Izvestia" about the suspension of the teacher of the school in Domodedovo from conducting classes after the appearance of information about the beating of students. In turn, parents of students and teachers created a petition in which they stated that the allegations of harassment and violence against the teacher were slander.
