"Widow's hump" has a scientific name - "cervical hyperlordosis". It is characterized by the deposition of fatty tissue on the border of the neck and back. This formation is not a disease, but can be a symptom of various conditions. About why the "widow's hump" occurs, whether it can be removed and how to prevent its appearance, told "Izvestia" on February 21, Roxana Portnova, a general practitioner of the medical company "SberZdorovye".

"There are many causes of cervical hyperlordosis. For example, in osteoporosis, bone tissue loosening can occur, and, as a consequence, there is a change in posture and the formation of fat deposition. Also in women during menopause, the hormonal background changes, in particular, the level of estrogen decreases, which can provoke the appearance of a "widow's hump", - said the expert.

According to her, another cause of its occurrence is a sedentary lifestyle, which can lead to slouching and prolonged tension of the neck muscles, which contributes to the formation of fatty deposits in this area. Cervical hyperlordosis can also occur in some endocrine diseases, which are associated with an increase in cortisol, or when taking medications, such as corticosteroids.

In this case, the "widow's hump" can cause patients headaches, limited mobility and pain in the neck, numbness and tingling in the hands, said the specialist. A person may also experience psychological discomfort.

Portnova advised to consult a general practitioner if a bulge appears on the border of the neck and back and any other complaints. He will conduct an examination, interview the patient and, if necessary, depending on the causes, may refer to other specialists, such as a neurologist, endocrinologist.

"In the treatment of cervical hyperlordosis, a comprehensive approach is used. To strengthen the muscles of the neck and back, as well as to correct posture, the doctor may recommend therapeutic exercise and massage. Along with this, the therapist can prescribe medication, such as taking anti-inflammatory drugs, myorelaxants. In case of a pronounced cosmetic defect, compression of nerve roots may require surgical assistance", - explained the therapist.

He drew attention to the fact that it is also important to correct lifestyle: it is necessary to engage in physical activity three to four times a week for at least 30 minutes, properly organize the workspace and give up bad habits.

Prevention of the appearance of cervical hyperlordosis is aimed at preventing the factors that contribute to its appearance. The doctor recommended to follow the correct posture during the day, especially when working at a computer, reading or using other gadgets - shoulders should be straightened, shoulder blades aligned, back straight, and chin slightly raised. Do not forget about breaks: every hour you should warm up, do light exercises for the neck and back. This will relieve muscle tension and improve blood circulation in the neck area. During sleep, you can use an orthopedic pillow, which will support the correct position of the neck.

Earlier, on February 3, Associate Professor of the Department of Sports Disciplines of the State University of Education Victoria Nikitinskaya told "Izvestia" that stretching exercises contribute to the traction of the spine, stretching and pumping the main muscle groups, restoring and improving the quality of muscle fiber, as well as flexibility, mobility of joints. In addition, such an exercise reduces stress, reduces insomnia and increases efficiency.
