Many gardeners follow the lunar sowing calendar before sowing tomatoes. This is a long-standing tradition, which our great-grandmothers adhered to. As many years of observation show, tomatoes sown in the right numbers sprout faster, easier to take root in the ground and give a good harvest. Even the ancient farmers noticed that the different phases of the moon differently affect plants. On the waning Moon, the satellite moves away from the Earth. During this period, the juices of plants rush down to the roots. This time is favorable for planting root crops such as potatoes, carrots, turnips and radishes.

During the waxing Moon, the satellite is closer to the Earth's surface and gives more energy to plants whose fruits are on top - cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes. The plant juices flow faster to the vegetative parts, which makes the vegetables grow better. In this phase, they also respond well to fertilizing and watering.

But the new and full moons are not suitable for sowing and planting seedlings, as the plants will be weak, sluggish and bring a meager harvest. It is also not recommended to sow on the day before and the day after the new or full moon.

To determine when to still sow tomatoes for seedlings, you need to look at the lunar calendar for a particular month. It is important to take into account that even in the phases of the waxing Moon there are unfavorable days for sowing. This is the time when the Earth's satellite is located in the constellation of Aries, Leo or Aquarius. The most successful is the location of the Moon in the signs of Capricorn, Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio, Taurus.

Suitable days for sowing tomatoes according to the lunar calendar:

  • February 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10;
  • March 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and March 31;
  • April 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 9, 10 and April 30;
  • May 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and May 29, 30, and 31.

Usually sow tomatoes on seedlings begin in mid-March - early April. But in the southern regions, sowing can occur earlier, and in the northern regions later. You can orient yourself by the timing of planting. By this time, the seedling should be 50-60 days. In the open ground it is transferred when the threat of frost passes, so you should focus on the climate conditions and weather of your region.

In addition, it is important to take into account the ripening time of the fruit. It depends on the variety and is indicated by manufacturers on the package. So, early-ripening tomatoes are recommended to sow about 100-110 days before the expected harvest, seeds of medium-ripening varieties - for 120 days, and late-ripening - for 130-140 days before the removal of the first fruits.

Before sowing, it is better to soak the seeds in a special solution that stimulates growth. It can be bought in the store or use folk remedies - aloe juice, honey water, ash or nettle infusion. Then they should be planted in moist soil to a depth of 1 cm, periodically spraying it with a sprayer.

The first sprouts will appear in about seven days. Three weeks after sowing, when the tomatoes will already have three or four leaves, it is necessary to conduct picking - transplant each sprout into a separate container. Grow a strong tomato seedling with thick stems is possible only if this procedure is followed.

Closer to mid-May, tomatoes can already be transplanted into the greenhouse. In the film rooms tomatoes are planted from May 20 to 31, and in the open ground - in the summer period, from June 10 to 20.
