Media reported on EU plans to partially suspend sanctions against Syria

The European Union (EU) plans to suspend sanctions against Syria in a number of areas, including energy and transportation. This was reported by Reuters on February 19 with reference to the draft final declaration of the European Council meeting to be held next Monday.
The document states that Europe will suspend restrictive measures "in the areas of energy, transportation and [post-war] reconstruction, as well as for financial and banking transactions related [to these areas]."
In addition, the cited text of the declaration notes the possibility of suspending other sanctions in the future.
Earlier, on January 27, the head of European diplomacy Kaja Kallas said that the foreign ministers of the 27 EU countries agreed on a roadmap for the phased lifting of sanctions restrictions against Syria. At the same time, she warned that Europe could reinstate sanctions again if the actions of the new Syrian authorities were "wrong".
