Canada is categorically opposed to Russia joining the Group of Seven (G7). This was announced by the state's Foreign Minister Melanie Joly at a briefing in Brussels on February 18.

"As for the proposal to make Russia part of the G7, I said: "No way," the National Post newspaper quoted her as saying.

US President Donald Trump said on February 13 that he wanted to restore the G8 with Russia's participation. According to him, excluding the Russian Federation was a big mistake. He stressed that Russian representatives should sit "at the negotiating table" together with the rest of the members of the organization.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on Trump's desire to return Russia to the G7, noted that the Russian side is more interested in constructive work in the form of the G20 than in restoring the G8. According to him, the Russian Federation has repeatedly spoken about the loss of relevance of the G7.
