Auto expert explained the reasons for the appearance of Check Engine on the dashboard

The Check Engine indicator on the dashboard indicates that the self-diagnostic system has detected a malfunction in the engine or other related systems. Its appearance can indicate a wide range of problems, said the director of mechanical repair department "Avilon Kia" Vadim Strelbitsky, reports "Rossiyskaya Gazeta " on February 17.
Thus, the Check Engine indicator can light up due to problems with the fuel supply system, faulty sensors (for example, the throttle position sensor), problems with the catalytic converter, failure in the ignition system, faulty spark plugs, damage to wiring or electronic components, he listed.
In case of activation of the Check Engine lamp, you should immediately stop the car if there are changes in engine operation (loss of power, unstable idling, increased fuel consumption), extraneous sounds (noises, knocks, vibrations). Increased level of exhaust gases or their odor may indicate problems with the catalytic converter or exhaust gas recirculation system, warned the expert.
Auto expert Igor Serebryakov said on February 7 that, according to a number of studies, due to the use of gasoline with a higher octane number (for example, Ai-98 instead of Ai-92), the increase in power can be about 7%, and fuel consumption can be reduced by about 6%. However, using fuel with a higher octane number than recommended by the manufacturer can cause serious damage to the engine, he warned.
