Salmon caviar prices in the Far East have dropped significantly. When purchased from fishermen, prices for salted pink salmon roe start from 4,500 rubles per 1 kg - 1.5 times less than in December 2024, for chum salmon roe - from 5,500 rubles per 1 kg (15% lower). This was shown by the analysis of wholesale offers, conducted by the All-Russian Association of Fishery Producers (VARPE). The data were confirmed on February 15 by major fishing companies of the Far East - members of WARPE.

According to the results of the analysis, in wholesale in the Central Federal District (CFD) products are also getting cheaper, but not so rapidly: the wholesale price of pink salmon caviar in Moscow decreased by less than 1%, to 8100 rubles per 1 kg, for keta a more noticeable decline - 7% (average price - 8000 rubles per 1 kg).

"Fishermen of the Far East have a rather large stock of red caviar in their warehouses, both frozen eggs, which are purchased by fish processing plants for further processing, and salted caviar in consumer and wholesale packaging," said WARPE President German Zverev.

He pointed out that the association is ready to fully cover the demand of citizens for caviar before the next holidays: February 23, Shrovetide and March 8. The head of WARPE assured that there will be no shortage of quality Far Eastern caviar at affordable prices.

According to Zverev, fishermen set their prices without being guided by peak sales seasons. In particular, the highest prices for caviar in summer and fall are traditional and are connected with the fact that at this time there is a poutine season. By the end of fall or the beginning of winter prices usually decrease to the average level, and from the end of January caviar rapidly becomes cheaper. This is caused by the fishermen's desire to sell off their leftovers as soon as possible and free up refrigerators for new catches. In the Far East, the poutine season starts on June 1, and by that time producers are trying to sell as much caviar as possible.

"This is the reason for the current price situation in the caviar sector of the Far East. The prices of wholesalers, processors and retailers are more linked to the peak periods of consumer activity, as the New Year and spring holidays account for the bulk of caviar sales in Russia. Nevertheless, given the sufficient volume of quality caviar on the market and a significant reduction in selling prices, we expect a reduction in retail prices," added the president of WARPE.

At the same time, the head of the association reminded the buyers of caviar to be careful during the period when there is an increased demand for this product, because at these times sellers of counterfeit or illegal products become active. To protect yourself from such purchases, it is necessary to buy caviar from trusted suppliers who have proven themselves in the market, as well as in large retail chains, specialized stores, markets or directly from producers - some large fishing companies open their own stores, but they are most often located in the regions where the fish is caught.

Zverev emphasized that verified suppliers value their reputation and are responsible for the storage of caviar, and it is its conditions that largely determine the quality of such products. The head of the association advised to read the label carefully, so as not to accidentally buy imitated or structured caviar instead of natural caviar, which is made of caviar mass with various additives.

On February 13, the Department of Control and Supervisory Activities of the Center for Development of Advanced Technologies told Izvestia that within six months, thanks to the introduction of labeling, almost 221 tons of counterfeit caviar of salmon and sturgeon fish were detected. In this mass almost 3 tons of black caviar, and the rest is red. Illegal products were detected in 34 regions of the Russian Federation.
