Therapist lists reasons why pain medications are ineffective
Painkillers can sometimes have no effect. The therapist of the Scandinavian Health Center Olga Chistik told "Izvestia" on February 15, why drugs do not help with pain. At the same time, pharmacist and head of the pharmacy SBER EAPTECA Dmitry Gurov explained what drugs and when you can take.
First, it may be due to incorrect dosage. For example, a person may take less than he needs. Secondly, a number of drugs are incompatible with alcohol and nicotine. Nevertheless, the patient may continue to smoke or drink alcohol, because of which the effect of the drug is lost. The same applies to the observance of diet during treatment. Thirdly, compliance with the rules of taking the medication is important. This is, in particular, the time of day, the amount of the drug, the rules of eating before or after the medication and the regularity of intake, the doctor explained.
"Incorrect selection of the drug can also cause a lack of effect. There are several types of painkillers depending on their active ingredient (anti-inflammatory, analgesics, anesthetics, antispasmodics). And it is necessary to choose a drug specifically for the type of pain. But a lot of people take one medication for every case, which is obviously wrong," Chistik said.
Also, some people expect that a pain medication a couple minutes after taking it should have a noticeable effect. But it doesn't. The drug needs time to be digested in the body and begin to act, the therapist explained.
Gurov, in turn, highlighted the main directions of drugs for different types of pain. Thus, he noted anti-inflammatory. Means with the active substance nimesulide are effective against inflammation in the muscles, in diseases of the musculoskeletal system and bruises. Ibuprofen fights pain syndrome in case of joint diseases, helps with headaches and menstrual pain.
Speaking about analgesics, he explained that preparations with the active substance metamizole sodium are used in case of dental or muscle pain, ketorolac trometamol - in case of febrile conditions, postoperative types of pain or pain in oncology.
He also brought up anesthetics. According to him, lidocoin hydrochloride is used as anesthesia before cosmetic procedures, it is also included in combination drugs for different types of pain. Preparations with the active substance articaine and epinephrine block the conduction of nerve impulses and are suitable in the case of local anesthesia before medical intervention - surgical or dental. Oxybuprocaine helps with sore throat when swallowing in case of sore throat, pharyngitis.
Antispasmodics - drotaverine hydrochloride and mebeverine hydrochloride - reduce the tone of smooth muscles, suitable in case of intestinal colic or spasms of internal organs.
"To choose the right drug on your own is quite difficult. That is why it is extremely important to consult a doctor. You can compile your anamnesis, indicating there the most frequent pains (their intensity, localization, duration and possible preconditions). Based on these data, the doctor will give a list of the most suitable painkillers," - emphasized the doctor.
Experts of the online pharmacy "SBER EAPTECA" shared analytics on purchases of painkillers. The top of painkillers by sales growth for 2024 to 2023 was headed by citramone - it was bought 6% more often, also among the most popular products in sales in this category were pentalgin (+85%) and nurofen (+19%).
Earlier, on January 21, a doctor-otolaryngologist of the medical company "SberZdorovye" told "Izvestia" that acute pain in the throat can be a sign of pharyngeal abscesses - a condition in which near the tonsils, on the sides of the pharynx or behind its mucous membrane forms a purulent cavity, the expert said. Such abscesses can occur, for example, as a complication of a bacterial infection of the throat.
