The incidence of influenza and other acute respiratory viral infections has been declining for several weeks in a row, according to data from the Research Institute of Influenza. Now the indicators are below the weekly epidemic threshold by 17.8%. At the same time, at the end of December traditionally there is their increase, and only in January, when the country goes on New Year vacations, the incidence rate begins to decline - adults stop going to work, children - to schools and kindergartens. About what is the reason for the decrease now and when will be the next surge in morbidity - in the material "Izvestia".

How many people fell ill with respiratory infections

The number of cases of influenza and ARVI in Russia was below the weekly epidemic threshold by 17.8%, follows from the data of the Research Institute of influenza. During the week from December 16 to 22, the number of sick people decreased by 6.9%, indicated in Rospotrebnadzor.

The beginning of the decline was recorded from November 25 - then the incidence rate was lower by 1.3% compared to the value of the previous week. Since then, the trend has remained unchanged.

- Over the past week in Russia, the number of ARVI cases decreased by 6.9% compared to the previous week, 709.9 thousand cases were registered, - reported "Izvestia" in Rospotrebnadzor.

However, the situation across the country is uneven. According to the agency, 46 regions of the country have exceeded the national average. 18.3% of the morbidity rate falls on Moscow, St. Petersburg, as well as the Moscow region.

The Research Institute of Influenza reported that a high level of morbidity with exceeding the epidemic threshold by 20% or more was recorded in five cities: Bryansk, Murmansk, Orenburg, Ulan-Ude and Chita . Thus, in the Murmansk region, according to the regional Rospotrebnadzor, the most sick among children 3-6 years old and schoolchildren. They account for 50.9% of ARVI cases.

In the country as a whole, according to the agency, viruses of non-influenza etiology prevail, Rospotrebnadzor reported. They noted that with a relatively small percentage of positive findings of influenza viruses, its share is growing. And in the Research Institute of Influenza specified that in Russia are spreading subtype of influenza A - pandemic 2009 and influenza type B.

Why the morbidity rate has fallen

Usually, the morbidity rate drops during the New Year vacations, when people go away for the holidays and stay in mini-groups with relatives and friends during this period, therapist Svetlana Kanevskaya reminded Izvestia. According to her, social separation is the main reason for the decrease in the peak incidence of acute respiratory viral infections.

The expert attributed the lower peak of morbidity this year to weather conditions and immune layer - the country has a large number of over-sick and vaccinated people. According to Rospotrebnadzor, the All-Russian flu vaccination campaign is almost completed in the regions: more than 82 million people have been vaccinated.

Svetlana Kanevskaya reminded that this year the summer was warm and sunny, as well as the fall.

- The body had time to accumulate more vitamin D - a powerful activator of the immune system, - she explained. - Also, this season there are no severe mutated highly contagious viruses. Our immune system meets already known viruses, to which we have antibodies, and the disease in some people can be asymptomatic.

The decrease in the incidence of the disease is now due to a sufficient level of vaccination of the population against influenza, believes general practitioner and head of the department of emergency and urgent care of the European Medical Center Marina Berezhnaya.

Olga Ulankina, a doctor at Gemotest, reminded that the first spike in the incidence of the disease usually occurs in early fall.

- Then the indicators stabilize or even go down," the expert explained. - But viruses do not go on winter vacation, they continue to circulate, migrate and adapt. And usually in January-February we face the second wave and peak incidence of seasonal respiratory infections.

This season, emphasized Olga Ulankina, "we are dealing with highly contagious strains", which are easily transmitted by airborne droplets and often lead to severe complications.

- The risk group includes people over 65, children, pregnant women and people with chronic diseases, including diabetes, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases," she reminded. - Their immunity is especially vulnerable to ARVI, and infections are more likely to be severe and cause complications.

To maintain health, the experts recommended to follow the diet, sleep and wakefulness, be outdoors more often, avoid crowded places, use medical masks, at home, at work or at school to ventilate the premises and do not forget to wash hands.
