US President Donald Trump commented on Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth's remarks on the unrealistic nature of Ukraine 's entry into NATO, noting that they accurately reflect the American position.

"I think Hegseth's comments yesterday were pretty accurate. I don't see that a country in Russia's position can allow them to join NATO," the US leader told reporters at the White House.

He also emphasized that former US President Joe Biden made a mistake by saying that Ukraine would be able to join NATO. According to Trump, this led to an escalation of the conflict.

On February 12, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth at a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) in Brussels noted that Washington does not consider Kiev's accession to NATO a realistic outcome of the peace process. He also assured that there would be no US military in Ukraine. On the same day, Trump said that the idea of Kiev joining the North Atlantic Alliance is inexpedient. Also, the American president noted that in the "not too distant future" it will be possible to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine.
