German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a conversation with journalists that the perpetrator of the hit-and-run on the crowd in Munich on February 13 does not deserve leniency.

"He must be punished and he must leave the country," the Focus publication quoted the politician as saying.

The chancellor also pointed to the need to apply all available measures of justice if the incident turns out to be a targeted attack.

The incident became known earlier in the day. In the central district of Munich gray Mini Cooper at high speed crashed into the participants of the strike, organized by the trade union Verdi. At least 28 people were injured in the collision, some were hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police detained the suspected driver - according to Bild, he was a 26-year-old citizen of Afghanistan. Bavarian Prime Minister and leader of the Christian Social Union Markus Söder did not rule out that the hit-and-run incident could be a terrorist attack.
