Russia's position on Syria remains unchanged despite the political situation and is based on relations of friendship and partnership. Russian President's Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told Izvestia in an interview.

"Our position in favor of developing cooperation with Syria is consistent, does not depend on political conjuncture and change of governments, is based on time-tested relations of friendship and partnership. We are guided by a sincere desire to help the Syrian people, who are experiencing severe consequences of the long-standing internal conflict," the diplomat said.

According to him, the events that led to the change of leadership in Syria in December 2024 have not changed the principled approaches of the Russian Federation, which stands in favor of the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the country.

"We brought our position to the new Syrian leadership during our meeting with the current Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on January 28 in Damascus. We discussed with him the development of Russian-Syrian relations in various areas. We agreed to continue contacts in the interests of concretizing the opportunities that objectively exist in the sphere of bilateral cooperation," Bogdanov added.
