Political analyst assessed the priority of the Ukrainian issue for Trump
American political scientist Malek Dudakov has doubted that Ukraine is the top priority of US President Donald Trump.
In a conversation with Lenta.Ru on Friday, February 7, the specialist noted that people in charge of Ukraine will call it a priority and try to persuade Trump to pay more attention to this issue, but it should be perceived as "an element of internal confrontation in the Trump administration".
The political analyst noted that during the election campaign Donald Trump promised to resolve the Ukrainian conflict, so he will have to deal with it. Meanwhile, in his first weeks in office, he emphasized other areas: Israel, the Gaza Strip, the Middle East, relations with China, trade wars, including Canada and Mexico. The European direction is so far out of his focus, suggesting that it is not yet his most key priority.
Dudakov noted that Trump will probably return to the issue at the Munich Security Conference, where Trump's plan for Ukraine will be presented in one form or another. For now, he is emphasizing domestic policy.
Earlier on February 7, Ludovic Hood, chief of staff and adviser to Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg, called a settlement in Ukraine a top priority for Trump at a security conference in Washington. According to him, the one will soon decide on the "carrots and sticks" to negotiate a solution to the crisis, notes the website kp.ru. It is also noted that Trump may tighten anti-Russian sanctions in the oil sector so that both sides "make concessions," according to 360.ru.
At the same time, the head of Vladimir Zelensky's office Andrei Yermak reported on the negotiations by Keith Kellogg, reports NSN. According to him, his upcoming visit to Ukraine was discussed, RT writes.
On the same day, The New York Post wrote that the US president first wants to stop hostilities in Ukraine and then move on to a deal on resources. We are talking about rare earth metals, Pravda.Ru writes.
On February 5, Trump said that Washington was engaged in "constructive negotiations" with Russia and Ukraine to end the conflict. Who exactly is involved in the discussion he did not specify.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly reminded that Russia has never given up on peace talks, but they should be conducted on the basis of the provisions agreed in Istanbul, not on the basis of "ephemeral demands."
The last round of talks between Russia and Ukraine took place in Istanbul on March 29, 2022. They lasted about three hours. Later, Kiev officially refused contacts with Moscow.
