Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister discuss the situation in Syria
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan about the situation in Syria. This was reported in the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry on February 6.
"As a follow-up to the previous contacts of presidents and ministers discussed the situation in and around Syria. It was agreed to remain in close contact on topical bilateral, regional and international topics, including the Middle East and Ukraine," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website.
In addition, the ministers reaffirmed the importance of coordination of steps in the sphere of interagency cooperation for the implementation of agreements between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The foreign ministers also reviewed the schedule of upcoming contacts.
Earlier, on February 4, the Russian foreign minister announced that the West is seeking to remove Moscow, Beijing and Tehran from the Syrian settlement in order to relegate them to secondary positions.
On January 29, the head of Syria's new interim government administration, Ahmed al-Sharaa, was declared the country's president for a transitional period. The new Syrian authorities announced the termination of the previous constitution and the dissolution of the country's parliament.
The day before, a Russian delegation, including Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and special representative of the Russian president Alexander Lavrentiev, visited Damascus and held talks with al-Sharaa. The talks from the point of view of the Russian delegation were held in a "traditionally friendly character," Bogdanov specified.
Last December 26, Lavrov said that Russia was interested in dialog with the new Syrian authorities. Moscow is also ready to support the consolidation of processes and the organization of elections, the Russian foreign minister stressed.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said on December 8 that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, after negotiations with the opposition, left the post of head of state and left the country, indicating to conduct the transfer of power peacefully. The new Syrian authorities are forming an interim government. The situation in Syria escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation against the militants.
