- Media reported on Israel's preparations for a possible tsunami due to earthquakes in Greece
Israel's National Security Council (NSC) held an urgent meeting and called on emergency services to prepare for a tsunami that could occur due to the ongoing earthquakes in Greece. This was reported by the Walla news portal on February 6.
"Yesterday (February 5. - Ed.), the deputy head of Israel's National Security Council (NSC) held an urgent meeting where emergency services and government agencies <...> were urged to prepare for a possible tsunami," the publication reads.
Within days, the Greek island of Santorini has experienced more than 2,000 earthquakes, some of which have a magnitude of 4.5 or higher. The strongest earthquake occurred two days ago, its magnitude was 5.3. It is reported that the island has already left more than 9 thousand people.
The portal noted that earthquakes in Greece are small and tectonic, and their accumulation could lead to a powerful shock in the future. At the same time Israel, given that its proximity to the zone of the incident is only 900 kilometers, could be severely affected by tsunamis caused by the ongoing natural phenomenon.
Israel is also preparing for the fact that it may be required to assist the Greek government in the event that the tsunami does not occur. In such a situation, a separate assessment of the situation will be made to organize and send the necessary aid, the portal wrote.
Previously, on February 4, Reuters, citing sources, reported that due to the ongoing earthquakes in Santorini, hundreds of people left the island on ferries and planes to reach the safety of Athens.
Before that, on February 3, it was reported that the authorities of Santorini ordered to close all schools on the island due to increased seismic activity. It was specified that during the last few days on the territory of the island there were earth tremors with a magnitude of up to 4.6.
