Switzerland assessed the possibility of joining the 16th package of EU sanctions
Bern will independently decide whether to join further European Union (EU) sanctions packages against the Russian Federation. This was stated to "Izvestia" on February 6 in the federal department of economy, education and research of the Swiss government.
"The Federal Council will continue to closely monitor developments and independently decide on joining any possible future EU sanctions packages against Russia," the department said when asked about the possibility of joining the 16th package of EU sanctions against Russia.
The day before, Brussels said that the 16th package of sanctions is planned to be adopted by February 24.
On January 30, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, said that Western sanctions against Russia have no practical sense.
Western countries increased sanctions pressure on Russia after the start of the special operation to protect the peaceful population of Donbas, which was announced on February 24, 2022.
