- Lavrov: Syria's new government has failed in dialog and understanding inside the country

The new government in Syria began to experience problems inside the country. It has not been able to establish a dialog with other members of the state leadership. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the XIV Middle East Conference of the Valdai Discussion Club on February 4.
"In Syria, of course, we can talk about it separately later, there are big problems there, including the problem of the power, which is embodied now by the leader Ahmad al-Sharaa, and those groups that were part of this structure and between which after the change of power in Syria not very good dialog and understanding," he said.
He said the republic's authorities should promote national dialog and unite the efforts of all external players.
He also noted that Western countries are seeking to remove Moscow, Beijing and Tehran from the Syrian settlement in order to relegate their rivals to secondary positions.
"Attempts to remove Russia, China and Iran from the process of external support of the Syrian settlement are hardly dictated by good intentions, but rather reveal the West's intentions to push its competitors to secondary positions," he said.
Lavrov added that Moscow is receiving signals about problems with the second stage of the peace agreement with Hamas, as Tel Aviv plans to take control of Palestinian territories on the northwest bank of the Jordan River.
Earlier on Jan. 30, Lavrov discussed Syria by phone with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud. The two ministers' views on the situation in the republic coincide. In addition, they touched upon practical issues within the framework of friendly relations between Moscow and Riyadh.
Before that, on December 26, Lavrov said that Russia is interested in dialog with the new authorities in Syria. Moscow plans to discuss not only security issues, but also the regional agenda. He confirmed that Russia is ready to support Syria in the consolidation of processes and help organize elections in which all political groups should participate.
The situation in Syria escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliatory actions against the militants.
