U.S. may abolish the Department of Education as part of a cost-cutting project

The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering eliminating the US Department of Education as part of a campaign to reduce government spending and the number of civil servants. The Wall Street Journal(WSJ) reported on February 3.
"Trump administration officials are considering taking steps to dissolve the Department of Education as part of a campaign by billionaire Elon Musk and his allies to reduce federal agencies and the number of government employees," the newspaper reported.
Under the initiative, certain functions of the dissolved agency may be transferred to other departments and ministries. It is added that such an executive order would require the development and approval of a legislative decision to abolish the agency.
During Joe Biden's term, Republicans criticized the education system he created, especially the widespread implementation of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs. Upon taking office for the second time, Trump issued an executive order to end DEI programs in all public institutions. At the same time, entrepreneur and billionaire Elon Musk, who led the new president's administration, launched a campaign to combat what he calls "wasteful spending" by the federal government and government organizations.
On the same day, Ilon Musk announced that he had launched a process to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Musk also said that the agency is unrecoverable and should be gotten rid of. According to him, USAID represents "not a wormy apple, but just a lump of worms."
Earlier in the day, Trump called USAID executives radical lunatics. In a conversation with journalists, he said that his administration would first take the madmen out of USAID and then decide on the future of the agency.
Prior to that, on January 20, the White House website published Trump's executive order to suspend Washington's development aid to other countries for 90 days. Later, on January 25, Reuters reported that USAID froze programs to support foreign countries, including Ukraine, after a State Department dispatch approved by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
