Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Sergey Tolchenov has announced that progress on a free trade agreement between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) has advanced significantly. He told Izvestia on February 4.

"This is where I feel great optimism. I believe that it is quite realistic to achieve, if not signing, then at least finalizing the text of the agreement," he said.

The final round of negotiations took place in July 2024. After that, both sides worked on small issues in the format of online meetings. According to Tolchenov, the most important of them are questions about tariffs, which, according to the document being prepared, will be brought to a zero rate of imposition of import taxes.

"Both from the Indonesian side and from the EAEU member countries there is a great interest in this," the diplomat emphasized.

Earlier in the day, Tolchenov announced the country's interest in the West-2025 exercise. In his opinion, Indonesia is generally interested in military-technical cooperation with Russia and is likely to join the exercises.
