Eyal Zamir will be appointed Chief of Staff of the Israeli army

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yisrael Katz have agreed to appoint Eyal Zamir as the next Chief of General Staff of the Israeli army. This was announced on February 1 by Dmitry Gendelman, an adviser to the Israeli Prime Minister's Office.

"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yisrael Katz agreed tonight to appoint retired Major General Eyal Zamir as the IDF's next Chief of General Staff," he quoted the office as saying in its Telegram channel.

Earlier, on January 21, IDF Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi submitted a letter of resignation effective March 6, and also admitted his responsibility for the military's failure in repelling an attack by Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023. He specified that he planned to complete the investigation into the Hamas attack by March 6.

Earlier, on November 5, 2024, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resigned the country's Defense Minister Yoav Galant, appointing Katz, who was then foreign minister, to his position. After that, mass protests began in Israel. Galant, in turn, said that the reason for his resignation was the controversy over conscription, hostages in captivity to Hamas and the commission to investigate massacres.

Later, on January 19, the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip began to hold, and Hamas handed over three Israeli hostages to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Israel released the first 90 Palestinian prisoners as part of the deal the next day.
