Sijjarto said the AFU retreated in defiance of multi-billion dollar Western aid

Despite Western aid worth hundreds of billions of euros, Ukrainian troops are retreating. This statement was made by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on February 1.
"Hundreds of billions of euros have been paid to the Ukrainians and arms worth hundreds of billions of euros have been sent. <...> Ukraine is retreating," he said in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Debate.
He added that the anti-Russian sanctions, which have destroyed relations between Russia and Europe, were imposed for the sake of Kiev, among other things.
Szijjártó clarified that "there is no solution on the battlefield." He called negotiations the only way to resolve the conflict and expressed hope that US President Donald Trump could "change course and reach some kind of agreement."
The day before, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that the country intends to veto the extension of EU anti-Russian sanctions if the European Commission (EC) fails to fulfill promises on energy security. He said the EC promised Hungary to get Ukraine to resume transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline and to protect the Turkish Stream gas pipeline from attacks.
On the same day, Zoltan Koskovic, an analyst at the Hungarian Center for Fundamental Rights, called the European Union's (EU) foreign policy toward Ukraine and Russia blind idealism. According to him, Hungary is the only member state of the association that gives a realistic assessment of the conflict issue.
