The number of defections in the Ukrainian Armed Forces is growing as many servicemen are disappointed with the situation at the front, the Guardian reported on 31 January, citing the Ukrainian military and officials. This was reported by The Guardian on January 31 with reference to Ukrainian military and officials.

"The exact figure (of the number of deserters. - Ed.) is a military secret, but officials admit that the number of those fleeing the army is high," the piece said.

According to the publication, Ukrainian commanders give impossible orders, and after the military are wounded, they force them to return to the front line.

In addition, one of the reasons for the mass flight from the front called fatigue due to the fact that many Ukrainians serve for several months without rest.

Also the AFU has structural problems, because some brigades were formed from inexperienced fighters and poorly showed themselves at the front, the material says.

Earlier, on January 24, the Secretary of the defense Committee of the Verkhovna Rada Roman Kostenko said that the number of cases of desertion of the AFU increased by 60% after the law, which allowed deserters to return to service without criminal prosecution.

On January 12, Ukrainian journalist Volodymyr Boyko also said that desertion cases in the ranks of the AFU have increased since the fall of 2024. Last year's figure is 368% higher than in 2023.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (term of office expired on May 20, 2024) signed the law on tightening mobilization on April 16, 2024. The document lists the categories of citizens who are subject to conscription. In addition, it toughens penalties for evading service in the AFU, but there are no provisions on demobilization.
