The holiday owes its appearance to St. Valentine, a Christian priest who lived in the III century during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius.

The ruler, famous for his military exploits, believed that young men are more useful on the battlefield, and the family only prevents it. He forbade soldiers to marry, so that they would not be distracted from service.

Valentine secretly married those who wished to marry, thanks to which he was called the patron saint of lovers. Soon it became known to the emperor. By his decree, the priest was seized and imprisoned and sentenced to execution.

According to legend, while in prison, the saint fell in love with the daughter of one of the guards. The day before his execution, he gave her a note with confessions of his feelings signed "Your Valentine". This love letter became the prototype of valentines - small cards in the shape of a heart, which contain ardent declarations, quotes and poems about love.
