The first large-scale raids have begun in New York as part of US President Donald Trump's campaign to deport a large number of illegal migrants. This was reported by The New York Post (NYP) on January 28.

The newspaper report specified that the target of the arrests were migrants suspected of committing serious crimes such as burglary, threats, kidnapping, extortion and various violent crimes.

"The purpose of the operation is to enforce U.S. immigration law and to preserve public and national security by preventing potentially dangerous criminal aliens from entering the United States," U.S. Customs and Border Protection (ICE) said on social network X (formerly Twitter).

At the same time, the New York City mayor's office said it was ready to cooperate with ICE, but recalled the city's status as a "safe haven for migrants".

Earlier, on January 27, it was reported that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (ICE) was instructed to increase the number of people detained for violation of immigration laws to at least 1200-1500 people per day. The next day, it was reported that the US immigration service made about 1, 200 arrests in one day, and almost half of those detained had no criminal record.

Before that, on January 24, the media learned of U.S. plans to send thousands of military personnel to protect the border with Mexico. As of today, about 2.2 thousand military personnel are already on the border as part of Task Force North in El Paso, Texas.
