The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (ICE) has been instructed by President Donald Trump's administration to multiply the number of people detained for violating migration laws from several hundred a day to at least 1,200-1,500 people a day. This was reported by The Washington Post (WP) on January 26, citing sources.

According to the newspaper, the administration of the head of state held a briefing at which the leadership of the service was informed that Trump "so far disappointed with the results of his campaign for mass deportation."

According to the newspaper's sources, the service's regional units are now required to conduct at least 75 detentions a day, and managers will face penalties for failing to do so.

ICE officials say the directive will greatly increase the likelihood that officers will use more lax enforcement tactics or face civil rights charges as they try to meet quotas.

In addition, an ICE official said the service will prioritize migrants who are suspected of criminal offenses.

Earlier, on January 25, it was reported that in the U.S. state of Mississippi proposed a "Certified Bounty Hunter Program", according to which detectives will be officially registered and receive $1 thousand for each successful deportation of an illegal alien. On the same day, it was reported that the number of crossings of the southern border by illegal migrants in the United States sharply decreased in the first days of President Trump's administration.

Before that, on January 24, the media learned about US plans to send thousands of military personnel to protect the border with Mexico. As of today, about 2.2 thousand military personnel are already on the border as part of Task Force North in El Paso, Texas.
