Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has compared the European Union (EU) to a person suffering from alcoholism because of its unwillingness to pursue peace in Ukraine, protect its borders from migrants and family values. In this regard, he called on the association to "sober up".

"The EU should sober up, but instead it 'keeps drinking'. It doesn't want peace, <...> it doesn't want border protection, it wants migrants, it doesn't want to protect families, <...> it doesn't want affordable energy, it wants a 'green' policy," he wrote on Facebook (owned by the recognized extremist company Meta, its activities are banned in Russia) on January 20.

According to the politician, the conscience of the Hungarian authorities is clear because Budapest warned about the weakening of Europe due to the ongoing conflict.

At the same time, Orban expressed the opinion that the EU is not just lagging behind in the global economic race, but has not even begun to prepare for it. He pointed to the substantial rise in energy prices destroying previously competitive companies and the disappearance of funds for financial aid to Kiev.

"The Hungarian presidency [of the EU Council in the second half of 2024] has raised the banner of peace, opened the door to ceasefires and peace talks, started a dialogue with <...> the parties and put pressure on European leaders to resume communication," the prime minister summarized.

Earlier, on January 21, Orban called on the EU to review the policy of sanctions against Russia. According to him, the restrictions have not achieved their goals and have only led to the destruction of the competitiveness of the European economy.

Prior to that, on January 20, the head of the Hungarian government ruled out the possibility of a victory of the West over Russia. He also announced the end of the Western world order, against the background of which the world powers are "with great enthusiasm" preparing for a new era.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the aggravated situation in the region.
