Political analyst warns of Kiev regime supporters on Trump's team
US President Donald Trump accused the administration of his predecessor Joe Biden of fomenting the threat of a nuclear World War III because of NATO expansion to Russia's borders, but not everything is so unambiguous in the Republican's own team. Eduard Lozansky, president of the American University in Moscow, said this on Wednesday, January 22.
He recalled that National Security Advisor Michael Waltz and Special Representative for Ukraine Keith Kellogg practically repeat the former administration's demands to lower the draft age for Ukrainians, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant threatens Russia with new sanctions if the country does not agree to U.S. demands to end the conflict.
"True, they all claim loyalty to Trump, so he will have the last word, unlike his first term, when almost all members of his team responsible for foreign policy, including Vice President Pence, betrayed him," the expert told Radio 1.
The political analyst specified that so far they and none of the nominees, except for Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have not passed the Senate confirmation.
"The exception is Michael Waltz, since the position of national security adviser does not require such approval. Republicans have a majority in the Senate, but it is slim, and it is very likely that some of them may vote against it. For example, their former leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, is already hinting at this, and he is a great friend of the current Kiev regime," Lozansky emphasized, adding that Trump and Vice President Vance will have to make every effort to convince their colleagues not to obstruct the president's ideas.
Earlier, on January 14, Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby said that Joe Biden was trying to convince Trump to continue supporting Ukraine. He noted that this would allow Kiev to negotiate with Russia from a "position of strength".
Before that, on January 12, Waltz indicated that Trump was of the opinion that it was impossible to resolve the conflict in Ukraine without negotiations with Russia, RT reported. He added that the administration of the then US president-elect would like to achieve a ceasefire "at any minute or day."
Trump himself, in turn, on January 10 emphasized the need to "end" the Ukrainian conflict. He added that he was preparing for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin after his inauguration, scheduled for January 20.
On December 13, 2024, Trump's team said it was negotiating with the current administration in the White House and Ukrainian officials to resolve the conflict. In addition, on the same day, Kellogg allowed that the crisis in Ukraine could end in the coming months.
Putin, for his part, emphasized in September that the Russian side has never refused to negotiate on Ukraine, but not on the basis of "ephemeral demands" but on the basis of the parameters agreed upon in Istanbul.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by the Russian president on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the background of the worsening situation in the region.
