- Latvian Saeima will consider a project to ban Russians from buying real estate in the country
The Latvian Seimas (parliament. - Ed.) will consider a bill providing for a ban on citizens and legal entities from Russia and Belarus to purchase real estate in Latvia. This was reported on January 21 by the portal Delfi.
"The parliamentary faction of the Prime Minister's "New Unity" submitted for consideration in the Sejm a bill limiting transactions that threaten national security. It provides for the introduction of a ban on the purchase of real estate in Latvia to citizens of Russia and Belarus, as well as legal entities that are owned by such citizens," the portal writes.
According to the head of the New Unity faction, Edmunds Jurevics, this bill provides for limiting any allegedly possible attempts of interference from Russia and Belarus, as well as protection against possible risks.
The portal also pointed out that this law will not apply to citizens who have received the status of permanent resident of the European Union or a permanent residence permit in Latvia.
Earlier, on December 23, 2024, Russian Charge d'Affaires in Latvia Dmitry Kasatkin shared with Izvestia that Latvians are tired of Riga's anti-Russian moves. He noted that Russophobia is still the dominant policy of Latvia and causes great damage not only to social and humanitarian and trade and economic ties with Russia, but also has a devastating effect on the economic situation of the republic itself and the well-being of its residents.
Western countries increased sanctions pressure on Russia after the start of the special operation to protect civilians in Donbass, which was announced on February 24, 2022.
