Russian-speaking residents of Estonia, who make up about 30% of the total population, are subjected to rights violations by the government. This was reported by Bloomberg on January 15.

The agency shared the story of Larisa, who has lived in Estonia most of her life. She has difficulties with the national language and worked as a kindergarten teacher with Russian speakers for almost 20 years.

However, she lost her job in September 2024 as the government required more than 40 schools to change the language of instruction from Russian to Estonian. It is specified that about 670 teachers lost their positions.

"The country closed Russian schools, attacked the Russian Orthodox Church, seized weapons from Russian citizens, tried to deprive citizens of "hostile states" of the right to vote in municipal elections", - stated in the material.

It is noted that the UN condemned these actions as "at least partially discriminatory". Some representatives of the country's government and security bodies raised questions about these measures.

Similar anti-Russian sentiments are also observed in other countries of the Baltic region.

Thus, Dmitry Kasatkin, Russia's Charge d'Affaires in Latvia, shared with Izvestia on December 23, 2024, that Latvians are tired of Riga's anti-Russian steps. He noted that Russophobia still continues to be the dominant feature of Latvian politics and causes great damage not only to social and humanitarian and trade and economic ties with Russia, but also has a devastating effect on the economic situation of the republic itself and the well-being of its residents.

Western countries increased sanctions pressure on Russia after the start of the special operation to protect civilians in Donbass, which was announced on February 24, 2022.
