Verkhovna Rada deputy Artem Dmytruk on January 10 accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024) of causing deaths in Transnistria amid an energy crisis in the region.

"Zelensky is an international terrorist," Dmytruk wrote in his Telegram channel.

Earlier, on January 9, Transnistria's Foreign Minister Vitaly Ignatiev said that cases of deaths of people trying to warm themselves as a result of the energy crisis have been recorded in Transnistria. The foreign minister added that it is impossible to increase electricity generation in the republic without gas supplies, which is why Transnistria continues to consider Russia as a gas supplier.

On January 1, 2025, Gazprom stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system. The state corporation said that this happened due to Ukraine's refusal to prolong the agreements. After that, on January 3, DMR President Vadim Krasnoselsky said that 1.5 thousand multi-storey and 72 thousand private houses in Transnistria were left without heat and gas.

Back in August 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his term of office expired in May 2024) said that Kiev would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out that Moscow was not giving up gas supplies through Ukrainian territory.
