Finland may face a shortage of electricity as a result of damage to the EstLink 2 cable. This was announced by Tuomas Rauhala, the head of power grid company Fingrid, on January 9.

"If the weather turns out to be very cold and there is no wind, the importance of flexibility in electricity consumption to ensure sufficient quantity will increase," broadcaster Yle reports his words.

At the same time, the company noted that on a normal winter day, there will be enough electricity if all generation and transmission facilities operate normally.

Theemergency shutdown of the EstLink DCcable between Estonia and Finland occurred on December 25, 2024. The next day it was reported that the Finnish border guard and police stopped the oil-laden Cook Islands-flagged tanker Eagle S, which is believed to be involved in the cable breakage at the bottom of the Baltic Sea.

On December 29, it became known that the Finnish police found a trace of an anchor on the bottom of the Gulf of Finland after the EstLink 2 electric cable was damaged. With the help of underwater work it was found out that the length of the trace is several tens of kilometers. The anchor of the tanker Eagle S was found on the bottom of the Gulf of Finland on January 7 this year.

As a precaution against disrupting the investigation, the Finnish police banned seven members of the tanker's crew from leaving the country, followed by the eighth.
