Spain's prime minister sees the threat of a revival of fascism in Europe

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed fear about the growth of far-right movements in Europe and called fascism the third political force. This was reported by The Guardian newspaper on January 8.
The Spanish Prime Minister said that autocratic regimes and values of the last century are gaining popularity in the world because of American entrepreneur Ilon Musk.
"...just a few days ago, an international reactionary movement that we have been warning about for years in Spain, and which in this case is led by the richest man on the planet, is openly attacking our institutions, inciting hatred and calling on people to support the heirs of Nazism in Germany, Europe's most important economy, in the upcoming elections," Sanchez said at an event in Madrid to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of dictator Francisco Franco and the country's return to democracy.
He said history teaches that freedom is never won forever and that in some parts of the world a democratic regime can be destroyed.
Earlier in the day, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced that the European Commission (EC) should take action amid statements by US billionaire Ilon Musk. It is reported that the entrepreneur for several weeks interfered in the political life of Europe. In particular, in his social network X (former Twitter), the businessman multiplied positions in favor of the German extreme right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AdG) and against the British Prime Minister, Labor's Keir Starmer.
Before that, on December 31, 2024, Musk published a post insulting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. On the same day, the billionaire expressed confidence in the party 's (AdG) victory in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Musk suggested that the political force will win an impressive victory, as the AdG's approval level has reached record highs.
