The future of Greenland should be determined by the inhabitants of the island. This was announced by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on January 7.

The statement was made against the backdrop of US President-elect Donald Trump's remarks during the appointment of an ambassador to Denmark that for the state "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity."

"I would certainly like to add a few words to the current discussion about Greenland and make it clear that, from the Danish government's point of view, Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders," she said in an interview with TV2.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the island is not for sale. She called for respect for the people who live in the country. According to Frederiksen, the future of the island will be decided in Greenland and Nuuk.

Earlier, on January 6, King Frederik X of Denmark changed the state's coat of arms amid the conflict. Now Greenland and the Faroe Islands look more prominent on the royal symbol.

Trump expressed interest in buying Greenland from Denmark back in 2019. At that time, he was turned down.
